Parasol Stars
Like its subtitle states, Taito’s Parasol Stars is a spinoff of Bubble Bobble, much like Rainbow Islands before it. You take on the role of Bubby and/or Bobby, here in human form, as they clear the screen of enemies, while gobbling up treats to score points. Rather than bubbles or rainbows, the chubby little heroes use their parasols to knock out the enemies. You can stun weaker foes by whacking them, which can then be juggled and tossed across the screen at other enemies. This is important, because stronger foes can’t be directly attacked, so you need toss at least a few other baddies at them before you can dispose of them. In some of these ways, it’s a little more like Don Doko Don, another similar platformer developed by Taito a few years prior. Unlike Bubble Bobble, many stages scroll horizontally back and forth, though they’re still quite small. Each stage is filled with hidden score items, many revealed by tossing things across the screen. With the umbrella extended, you can also float down slowly between platforms.

Parasol Stars (TG-16 Mini)
Okay, there are more convoluted franchises out there, but Bubble Bobble has a lot of weird branches. Parasol Stars is the first game to carry the subtitle "The Story of Bubble Bobble III", but somehow wasn't the last. Well, anyway. This is the actual third game in the Bubble Bobble series, following from the original game and its beloved sequel Rainbow Islands. Notably, this was the first game in the series to be developed directly for the home market. There is no arcade version of Parasol Stars. Indeed, the very hardware it was developed first for was the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16! A rather prestigious honor for NEC and Hudson's platform, in hindsight. I'm glad it was able to be included in the mini-console, considering its historical importance.
I'm also happy it's here because Parasol Stars is great. I like it better than Rainbow Islands, as its umbrella mechanics are just as deep as the rainbows while also being a lot more intuitive. The graphics are great, and the music (composed by Noriyuki Iwadare) holds up to the standards of the series. It has smaller levels than Rainbow Islands, but it isn't afraid to throw in a little scrolling here and there. There are lots of secret things to find, but unlike with Rainbow Islands they're neither required nor ridiculously esoteric. Indeed, in a lot of ways this feels more like a game designed for arcades than its predecessor.
I know this is a bit of a short entry coming off a few days without any articles, but in this case I don't have too much more to say without going into excessive detail. Parasol Stars is tons of fun. If you can't track down a TG-16 Mini to play it, you can also find it on most modern consoles now via ININ Games. If you enjoy elimination platformers, you should play this one in whatever fashion is accessible to you.

Review: "Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III" (PS4) | #retrogaming #PlayStation #NintendoSwitch #RetroGames #Nintendo
It is with great pleasure that I present this review of Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III for the PlayStation 4!* You may be asking yourself, “Why would you care so much about reviewing a rerelease of some obscure TurboGrafx-16 (TG16) game that only five people have ever heard of?” You see, I am one of those five people, as I actually bought a copy of Parasol Stars brand new for my…

#Kirby#Kirby memes#Bandana Waddle Dee#Bandana Dee#Parasol Waddle Dee#Sailor Waddle Dee#Sailor Dee#rip Sailor Dee not appearing in a game since 2011#I think my one complaint about Kirby as a series is that characters outside of the main four are often forgotten about or never used again#like I feel like every game will introduce a new character and then we maybe see them just one or two more times before they disappear#and don’t get me wrong I do enjoy seeing new characters introduced in new games#but I do wish that the characters that already exist would be acknowledged more or given more depth and development#because I feel like there’s a lot of potential there like we could see so many more stories or games involving them#I feel like there’s a lot of potential for more Magolor Epilogue type of stuff with other characters#I think it’d be nice to see what all the former antagonists have been up to after the end of their games#I think that Star Allies kind of does this a little bit but just on a surface level not more in depth#this is why I like exploring this stuff in my fanart lmao like if HAL/Nintendo won’t do it I’ll do it myself

Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III launches July 11 - Gematsu
Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch on July 11 for $9.99 / €9.99, ININ Games announced. Pre-orders are available now for Switch via Nintendo eShop with a 10 percent-off discount, and will open for Xbox Series and Xbox One on June 19. The PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 versions can be wishlisted via PlayStation Store.
Here is an overview of the game, via ININ Games:
About The legendary bubble dragons Bub and Bob are back… in human form!? In this critically acclaimed TAITO classic, available on modern consoles for the first time, the now-transformed Bubby and Bobby embark on a mission to save their neighboring planets. But this time, instead of blowing bubbles, our favorite duo swings colorful parasols filled with magical powers. Use parasols as a shield against enemy projectiles or stun, and pick up and throw foes as projectiles themselves! Parasol Stars released in 1991 as the sequel to Rainbow Islands, marks the third installment in TAITO’s massively successful Bubble Bobble series of action platformers and has lost none of its colorful charm throughout the years. High-score hunters can rejoice because just like in the bubble-filled predecessor skillful play will quickly fill the levels with sweet and fruity collectibles that can be gathered to climb the leaderboard. Look out for a variety of pick-ups to be found granting you all sorts of special powers from bouncing energy balls to screen-clearing magic. Play on your own or bring a friend and take on the challenging levels together! Just like using enemies as projectiles, flinging your buddy against the enemies could be a good strategy. But be careful, as you won’t only stun the enemy you hit but your buddy-turned projectile as well. In the two-player cooperative mode, tactical teamwork is key to clearing the levels and getting the highest scores.
Key Features
Addictive arcade-style gameplay.
Creative and clever game mechanics with magical Parasols.
More Parasols! Enjoy the tactical depth of the action-filled two-player cooperative play.
A cosmic journey with eight vibrant planets (and two secret bonus levels).
Catchy and memorable soundtrack.
Parasol Stars is a retro gem brought back for modern consoles whose bright and beautifully crafted worlds will draw you in, and its simple but addictive one- or two-player gameplay will make you want to come back again and again to reach the top of the leaderboard.
